		<description>
Adaptive reuse is an area of study within the Interior Architecture department that involves repurposing existing structures for new uses. The post-professional MA program in Adaptive Reuse at Rhode Island School of Design offers a comprehensive exploration of this practice, integrating aesthetic, theoretical, and technological perspectives. The program culminates in a final studio project that tackles contemporary social issues, such as refugees and homelessness.

In the final studio project, students collaborate with a local organization to adapt two sites in the Boston area into transitional homeless shelters. The project places a particular emphasis on Trauma Informed Design principles to ensure that the shelters provide a safe and supportive environment for those in need. Through this project, students gain hands-on experience in applying adaptive reuse strategies to address pressing societal challenges.

Masters of Art in Adaptive Reuse 2023:
Nida Ansari, Miranda Goldschmidt, Mariyam Kherodawala, Simran Mehta, Aaron Neal, Aishwarya Pavan, and Parvati Vijaykumar.

Studio co-taught by Michael Grugl and Liliane Wong.

Built in the early 1900’s, our host structure is a decommissioned convent building located in a single family residential neighborhood. Sharing boundaries with a church and a school, the site is non-conforming with the R-1 zoning. As a non-conforming site, the new use of the convent for emergency family shelter may elicit opposition from abutters. As such, the original entrance to the convent, located on a residential street, will be reversed to the rear and away from its neighbors.Additions are not possible as the floor area ratio is maximized.

The brick structure has been altered to accommodate various programmatic needs over time, with the last use as a temporary dormitory in 2019. The U- shaped building faces Northwest with a courtyard that receives afternoon sun. It is within walking distance of a bus stop, and key services like a supermarket and daycare are located within less than half a mile away.

The site includes 8 parking spaces and shares a playground with the neighboring school.

Built in 1976, our host site consists of three apartment buildings within a predominantly residential area, composed of public housing, apartment buildings and multi-family houses.

Bounded by a busy commuter rail line on one side, the site slopes steeply from east to west. The buildings sit on an elevated plinth, which creates a lower floor three feet below grade.

Each building contains a typical three story floor plan with two unconnected stairs, on three separate parcels of land. The parcels of land differ in their floor area ratio; parcel one and two are maximized, while parcel three is below fifty percent.
The buildings face north west with a rear yard that receives ample afternoon sun. It is within walking distance of a bus stop. Minor services such as a mini-market and daycare are located within a half a mile. A community garden down the street is a hopeful sign for collaboration within the neighborhood.

Open DoorsAaron Neal

In recent months, groups of migrants have gathered near the U.S. border walls for days or weeks at a time in hopes of a new beginning. They have journeyed far from their own country, leaving everything behind. These are some of the future users of our designs for these family shelters. As asylum seekers, they have few rights as they wait for their case to be heard. They have no citizenship and are unable to work legally. Using the principles of trauma informed design, this project focuses on the dignity of having some private space with its own front door.

Open Doors creates individual units spread over a campus centered around shared facilities for developing communities. The intervention utilizes the two host structures as shell interventions and the last host structure as a shell plus an addition intervention by treating each parcel separately. The shell intervention accommodates new activity and programs within the existing structure by moving the existing stairs to the exterior. The shell and addition intervention will bring the existing structure back to a whole state through the introduction of exterior stairs and an extension into the landscape. As structures sited in steeply sloping ground, my first intervention is a regarding that will allow for direct access to the site from the street. Accessible routes allow for the addition of ten accessible units on the ground floor, and eliminate safety&#38;nbsp;concerns for falling off the previous existing site edge.

Trauma informed design is intended to support individuals, specifically children, who have experienced trauma by providing a space where all feel safe, secure, community, control, and dignity. Relocating the stairs to the exterior of the building achieves more efficient and comfortable living space. Individuals achievedignity in having private space with its own front door.

Visual and physical connections to outdoor courtyards allow residents of the community to have the ability to choose a space of their own, which serves as an extension of their temporary home. Access to the outdoors serves as an area of interaction throughout the campus. The interactions create a sense of community and begin the indirect healing process.

House Away from HomeAishwarya Pavan

The project’s focus on a lean and mean approach while incorporating aspects of Biophilia aims to
efficiently provide housing for homeless families, aiming to create spaces that promote their well-being, social integration and expedite healing.

The entrance, surrounded by nature, creates a calming atmosphere, welcoming the families into their new home. While one of the existing 3-storey buildings has been repurposed into a communal and administrative building forming the central hub for the community, providing spaces for shared activities, administration and support services, the other 2 residential
parcels have undergone vertical expansion by adding an additional floor to each of them.

Each unit is equipped with its own living, bedroom, and kitchenettes allowing families to prepare their own meals and eat within the comfort of their own space. This eliminates the need for a shared communal kitchen and dining. This is particularly important for mothers who are victims of domestic violence or families with disabled children who require additional privacy and security.

The 3 buildings extend into a large open floor plate with natural elements providing a sense of connection and rejuvenation for the families. Nature and open spaces can have a calming and therapeutic effect on individuals who have
experienced trauma. By incorporating outdoor areas for residents to engage with, such as gardens, walking paths, or communal gathering spaces, designers provide opportunities for residents to
connect with nature, find moments of respite, and engage in activities that support their well-being.

Safe GroundMariyam KherodawalaParvati Vijaykumar

Homelessness can be destabilizing, demoralizing, and lonely. By providing a foundation to build a safe network, our design intervention fosters a sense of community and celebrates good fellowship.

A single storey volume topped with skylights is inserted into the existing courtyard emphasizing the repositioned entry and transforming the interactions within the host structure. Visible from afar, the sculptural skylights puncture the roof of the volume, giving the shelter a positive and contemporary identity. At its core, this strategy invites people to come together, promoting a conducive healing environment.

The new transparent building skin brings in maximum daylight and connects the interiors with the natural environment. This intervention adds to the existing as a new layer in time that celebrates child centric approach through the lens of trauma informed design. As opposed to a conventional opaque entryway, a glass brick facade promotes visibility and transparency. The roof garden created on the central volume ensures a more private outdoor space and increases interaction with the host structure, promoting community interactions.

On the interiors, it was strategically planned to have large communal spaces with micro rooms. These shared spaces inculcate a sense of community whilst keeping minimal but sufficient comfort for residents in their private rooms. As homelessness can make one feel lonely and insecure, the balance of these two zones ensures comfort and support. Thus, creating a platform for growth of an individual’s mindset, to improve and proceed into their future lives.

Cloud 9Miranda Goldschmidt

Trauma comes in many forms: physical, emotional, psychological, spiritual or sexual abuse, neglect, discrimination, violence, etc.

Clouds come in many forms: Cumulus, Stratus, Cirrus, etc. These typologies can be manifested into different morphological manifestations:&#38;nbsp; planar, linear and punctual.

Cloud 9 is located within a host structure of a U-shaped religious convent from the 1900’s located within the same parcel as a church and a school in the south west of Boston, MA that has to be converted into a temporary shelter without using the front door.

The main intervention is an addition to create a new facade at the rear with two separate types of entrances, one private and one public. The addition&#38;nbsp; is a more permeable building piece that creates a more welcoming and softer approach.

This addition serves as intermediate spaces and also as the new facade. The light curved walls&#38;nbsp; contrast to the solid heavy walls of the existing building, and they blur the boundary with the exterior. Through this intentional design, residents with traumatized experiences can reconnect with nature, feeling the breeze, sunlight, or even the misty rain as it enters the space.
