Cloud 9
Miranda Goldschmidt
Trauma comes in many forms: physical, emotional, psychological, spiritual or sexual abuse, neglect, discrimination, violence, etc.
Clouds come in many forms: Cumulus, Stratus, Cirrus, etc. These typologies can be manifested into different morphological manifestations: planar, linear and punctual.
Cloud 9 is located within a host structure of a U-shaped religious convent from the 1900’s located within the same parcel as a church and a school in the south west of Boston, MA that has to be converted into a temporary shelter without using the front door.
The main intervention is an addition to create a new facade at the rear with two separate types of entrances, one private and one public. The addition is a more permeable building piece that creates a more welcoming and softer approach.
This addition serves as intermediate spaces and also as the new facade. The light curved walls contrast to the solid heavy walls of the existing building, and they blur the boundary with the exterior. Through this intentional design, residents with traumatized experiences can reconnect with nature, feeling the breeze, sunlight, or even the misty rain as it enters the space.
